New York Theater has grown immensely in popularity over the last few years. Because of the rising production costs with the addition of Hollywood stars and big name directors, the cost of purchasing Broadway play tickets is ever climbing. New York City’s Times Square region of Manhattan is one of the most journeyed areas in the city and home to 39 Broadway Theaters. With a little research and some inside information, it is possible to get discounted tickets to some great Broadway Plays.
There are several options to explore when you are trying to save money on Broadway tickets. The first option is to use one of the three TKTS discount ticket booths in New York City. The Times Square Booth sells day-of-performance tickets only. The South Street Seaport Booth sells tickets to evening performances on the day of the performance, and matinee tickets the day before. The Downtown Brooklyn Booth sells tickets to evening performances on the day of the performance, and matinee tickets the day before as well tickets to Brooklyn’s performing arts events. TKTS Times Square, TKTS Seaport and TKTS Downtown Brooklyn accepts credit cards, cash, traveler’s checks or TKTS Gift Certificates. All three locations sell tickets at 50%, 40%, 30% and 20% off full-price (plus a $4.00 per ticket service charge, which helps support other TDF services and programs). Availability and ticket inventory change throughout the day and at the discretion of individual productions. The down side to TKTS booths is that the show that you desire to see may not be available. If you are into spontaneity the TKTS booth may be the perfect option for you.
For those of you who prefer the convenience and ease of online shopping, it is often possible to find discount codes online for many ticket vendors. Simply do a search for “discount codes Broadway show” or “Lion King Discount Code” or “Broadway tickets”, etc… Searching the internet can prove to be an effective way to attain great seats at great prices. Through online ticket brokers, you can also find available seats for many sold out and in demand performances.
Absolutely, the most affordable way to purchase Broadway play tickets is to purchase Standing Room Only (SRO) tickets and partial view tickets. They can be purchased at the Broadway Show Ticket Box Office on the day of the performance. The precise time that SRO ticket sales begin varies so it is difficult to plan what time to arrive. The tickets are sold on a first come first serve basis, so early arrival is the key in assuring that you attain tickets. It is not uncommon for the box office to only accept cash payments, so make sure you are prepared. The average cost of the tickets is $25. The downside to SRO is that you do not actually get a seat! These tickets are for usually available for sold out performances. Often times the view may not be great, and of course you are bound to have achy feet by the end of the performance. On a similar note, sometimes the Box Office may offer partial view seating tickets at discounted prices. These tickets have some sort of visual or auditory disadvantage. The plus to these tickets is a great price and an actual seat for the show. Often the partial view seats are still pretty good seats and the Box Office will be upfront with you if you ask about the seats’ location.
My final piece of advice for finding great deals on tickets is to avoid scalpers. Scalpers charge premium prices and you could be at risk for purchasing a counterfeit ticket. If a deal sounds too good to be true it probably is!!! Good Luck with your ticket hunt and enjoy the show!
